Swedish Doctors Say Darvocet And Darvon Are The Worst Prescription Drugs Ever

April 7, 2011
“We think drugs containing propxyphene are the worst drugs ever, among prescribed drugs,” Dr. Ulf Jonasson said in a statement to the public. “No single drug in history has caused so many deaths as these drugs have done during the last 50 years.”
The Swedish doctors have written and published eight scientific articles about the effects of propxyphene drugs in addition to two dissertations about Darvocet and its fatal consequences, which are available as a book, available in English and Swedish, entitledFatalities Due to Use or Misuse of Painkillers. In it, the doctors claim that since U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly developed Darvocet in 1953, it has killed hundreds of people every year in Sweden and thousands in the U.S.
“Our main result was that during the investigated years 1992-1999, 200 persons in Sweden were poisoned to death every year due to propoxyphene. Two hundred persons died every year because they used a very popular painkiller and we thought this was very alarming,” Dr. Jonasson says.
Extrapolating that data onto the U.S. population and adjusting it to reflect that Darvocet was even more widely used in the U.S. than in Sweden, Dr. Jonnason says that the number of people who died as a result of taking Darvocet or another propoxyphene drug was at least 6,000 per year and likely many more.
Dr. Jonasson explains that in Sweden, medical doctors take a blood test of all dead persons submitted to forensic medicine authorities. These blood tests screen for every legal drug available in Sweden, including propoxyphene. Under the U.S. system, however, different states have different laws and different systems of forensic analysis, so it may be impossible to determine how many American actually died while taking Darvocet or Darvon.
