My story about David and Goliath - Me and Eli Lilly. Will David win again?

A couple of weeks ago I was aware of the fact Eli Lilly – one of the BigPharma – had banned me - @DrUlfJonasson - in their Twitter account @LillyPad. What could our crime have been?

We have been studying the painkilling substance (Dextro) Propoxyphene (DXP) since 1993. Eli Lilly synthesized the substance 1953 and the drugs Darvon and Darvocet came out on the market, first time in 1957. We wrote and defended two doctoral dissertations concerning the fatalities of DXP.

Our research have given great results in the whole world, and our data was behind the decision to ban the substance in Sweden, in UK, in the European Union and finally in USA as well in India. We have estimated the numbers of fatalities due to DXP in USA and in the whole world.

The drug was banned in USA in November 19^th 2010 but the trials have not started yet. Hundreds of lawyers have worked in soon five years to prepare to the trials. It will all cost hundreds of millions dollars. 

Eli Lilly is the company – among many, many other companies - that will be most sued. It seems they will do anything to try to stop people that works against them – as lots of people do. I cannot find anything else than Eli Lilly is worried, may be very worried about the coming trials. That could be damages for several hundred million dollars.

And apparently some people in the company have also tried to stop us.

Apparently we are a threat to the company as they banned us, talking about David fighting Goliath - and David will be the winner - as always. 

What happened after I and Eli Lilly published some tweets? 

During the five days these tweets were published (24-28 June) I had my most popular tweets ever: The number was 567 clicks, and just one day – yesterday - got 300 clicks. 

I do find it interesting, very interesting that the giant Eli Lilly, with around 38 000 employees and a revenue for the year 2013 in US-Dollars was 23,113 billion also is fighting us. 

Are they really scared for our research – and if – they ought to be that.

Igår – lördagen den 27 juni – hade jag tänkt lägga ut några rader där jag skulle presentera en siffra – 25 000 – som är det antal ”öppnade” tweets som jag nu hade uppnått. Jag hade sänt ut ca 27 500 tweets och av dessa hade alltså hela 25 000 ”öppnats” - ca 90% - och förhoppningsvis lästs. En riktigt hög siffra om Du frågar mig. Det är annonsörerna som vill ha siffror på allt som lägga ut på nätet.

Nördigt, visst, men genom vår forskning är jag mycket road av data, statistik, att presentera och analyser sådana sammanhang. Men nu blev det inte som jag hade tänkt, därav denna lilla berättelse.:

Den 24 juni lade jag ut följande tweet – och det blev en mycket stark reaktion med mina mått mätt, dvs det klickades på mina länkar och då fick den intresserade tillgång till mer än 220 nya tweets där vår forskning presenteras. Detta roade uppenbarligen en hel del personer, inte minst mig.

Hoppsan då. Det var första gången under alla år – sedan mitten av 90-talet - som vi arbetat med vår forskning som Eli Lilly hört av sig, och reagerat. Eli Lilly är världens 10-11 största Läkemedelsföretag, och finns i 125 länder. De har ca 38 000 anställda, deras nettovinst för 2013 var ca 40 miljarder kr, tillräckligt för att kunna driva de flesta kommunerna i Sörmland, Katrineholm har en omsättning på 2 miljarder per år.

Nu har dom blivit förbannade på mig, riktigt kul vill jag påstå.

Och nu brakade det loss. Jag har aldrig under min snart sex år på Twitter fått så många reaktioner. Under gårdagen sände jag ut ca 75 tweets, men fick hela 300 klicks, ”öppnade tweets”.

Under de fem dagarna – 24-28 juni – fick jag totalt 567 klicks, varav all time high blev igår – hela 300 klicks.

I stället för att skriva dessa rader igår ägnade sig Gittan och jag åt lokala förlustelse, vilket innebar en fotoutställning på vårt fina bibliotek, vi tog en fika på stan med stora kletiga och goda bullen och sedan avslutade vi festligheterna med en hämt-pizza som vi delade på.
